Slipped Disc / Herniated Disc

A slipped disc, also known as a herniated disc, occurs when one of the soft cushions (discs) between the bones of the spine (vertebrae) becomes damaged.

Each spinal disc has:

  • a soft, gel-like center (nucleus pulposus), and

  • a tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus).

When the outer layer weakens or tears, the inner material can bulge or leak out, pressing on nearby nerves. This pressure is what causes pain and other symptoms. Slipped discs most commonly affect the lower back (lumbar spine) or neck (cervical spine).

Symptoms of Slipped Disc / Herniated Disc

Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity of the disc problem. Common symptoms include:

Pain

  • Lower back pain or neck pain

  • Pain that radiates to the leg (sciatica) or arm

  • Pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing

Nerve-Related Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, legs, or feet

  • Weakness in muscles supplied by the affected nerve

  • Burning or sharp, electric-like pain

Severe Symptoms (Urgent)

  • Difficulty walking or standing

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control

  • Progressive weakness or numbness
    (These require immediate medical attention)

Causes of Slipped Disc / Herniated Disc

Several factors can contribute to disc herniation, including:

Age-Related Wear and Tear

  • Discs naturally lose water content with age, becoming less flexible and more prone to injury

Poor Posture & Repetitive Strain

  • Prolonged sitting

  • Incorrect lifting techniques

  • Repetitive bending or twisting

Injury or Trauma

  • Sudden falls

  • Accidents or heavy impact

Lifestyle & Health Factors

  • Obesity (extra stress on the spine)

  • Lack of exercise

  • Smoking (reduces disc nutrition)

  • Weak core and back muscles

What Happens If a Slipped Disc Is Ignored?

Ignoring a slipped disc can lead to progressive and long-term complications, such as:

Worsening Pain

  • Pain may become chronic and harder to manage

  • Daily activities and sleep can be severely affected

Permanent Nerve Damage

  • Long-term nerve compression can cause lasting numbness or weakness

  • Muscle wasting may occur if nerves are damaged for too long

Reduced Mobility & Quality of Life

  • Difficulty walking, sitting, or standing

  • Reduced ability to work or perform daily tasks

Serious Neurological Complications

  • Loss of bowel or bladder control (a medical emergency)

  • Partial paralysis in severe untreated cases

A slipped or herniated disc is common but treatable, especially when addressed early. Many cases improve with proper rest, physiotherapy, posture correction, and medical care. Ignoring symptoms can turn a manageable condition into a serious, long-term problem.
