Pediatric Scoliosis

Pediatric scoliosis is a condition in which a child’s spine curves sideways in an abnormal “S” or “C” shape. It is diagnosed in children and adolescents from infancy through the teenage years. In addition to the side-to-side curve, the spine may also rotate, causing uneven shoulders, hips, or ribs. The condition can range from mild to severe and may worsen as the child grows.

Symptoms of Pediatric Scoliosis

Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and progression of the curve. Common signs include:

  • Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades

  • One hip higher than the other

  • Head not centered over the pelvis

  • Uneven waistline

  • One side of the rib cage sticking out (rib hump), especially when bending forward

  • Clothes fitting unevenly

  • Back pain (more common in older children and adolescents)

In mild cases, pediatric scoliosis may not cause pain and can go unnoticed without screening.

Causes of Pediatric Scoliosis

Pediatric scoliosis can develop for several reasons:

  • Idiopathic scoliosis: The most common type; the exact cause is unknown

  • Congenital scoliosis: Caused by abnormal spinal development before birth

  • Neuromuscular scoliosis: Associated with conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spinal cord disorders

  • Genetic factors: A family history of scoliosis increases risk

  • Growth-related factors: Rapid growth during puberty can cause curves to worsen

What Happens If Pediatric Scoliosis Is Ignored?

If pediatric scoliosis is left untreated, especially during growth years, it may lead to:

  • Progressive worsening of the spinal curve

  • Permanent spinal deformity

  • Chronic back pain in adolescence or adulthood

  • Reduced lung and heart function in severe cases due to chest compression

  • Decreased mobility and physical endurance

  • Emotional and self-esteem issues related to body appearance

Early detection is important. When identified early, pediatric scoliosis can often be managed with monitoring, bracing, physical therapy, or other treatments to prevent progression and avoid surgery.
