Spinal Adjustments

Spinal adjustments are controlled manual techniques applied to selected spinal joints to help improve joint movement and manage appropriate musculoskeletal pain and stiffness. At One Spine Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Centre, our chiropractors personalise care according to each patient's symptoms, movement and physical needs.

What Spinal Adjustments Help With

Spinal adjustments, also known as chiropractic manipulation, may be considered when assessment identifies joint or movement-related factors associated with musculoskeletal symptoms.

Depending on the individual, they may form part of care for back pain, neck pain, shoulder-region discomfort, joint stiffness, reduced spinal mobility, muscle tension and selected movement restrictions.

Not everyone experiencing these symptoms requires an adjustment. The appropriate approach depends on the patient's presentation and assessment findings.

How Do Spinal Adjustments Work?

During a spinal adjustment, a chiropractor applies a controlled movement or force to a specific joint. When joint movement is stiff or uncomfortable, an appropriately selected technique may help improve mobility and reduce musculoskeletal discomfort for some patients.

The goal is not simply to make the spine "crack" or force bones back into a supposedly perfect position. Chiropractic care considers joint movement, symptoms and physical function when determining whether an adjustment is appropriate.

What Is the Popping Sound?

Some spinal adjustments produce a popping or cracking sound because of changes within the joint during movement. This does not mean that bones have been "put back into place."

A successful treatment also does not depend on producing a sound. Some chiropractic techniques may result in little or no audible popping.

When May Spinal Adjustments Be Considered?

Spinal adjustments may be considered for suitable musculoskeletal concerns affecting different patients, including:

  • Office workers with back or neck discomfort
  • Active adults experiencing stiffness or movement restrictions
  • Athletes with appropriate musculoskeletal concerns
  • Older adults where manipulation is considered suitable
  • People recovering from certain musculoskeletal injuries
  • Individuals with recurring back or neck discomfort

Age or occupation alone does not determine whether an adjustment is appropriate.

What Happens Before an Adjustment?

Before treatment, our chiropractors assess your symptoms and relevant health or injury history. The assessment may also consider the location and pattern of discomfort, movement, mobility, physical function and activities that aggravate symptoms.

This is particularly important for symptoms such as radiating arm or leg pain, numbness or tingling, which can have different causes and may require further investigation.

Are Adjustments the Only Part of Chiropractic Care?

Not necessarily. Although spinal adjustments are a core chiropractic technique, some patients have broader rehabilitation needs.

Depending on your condition, care may also involve or be complemented by physiotherapy, mobility work, therapeutic exercise, strengthening, functional movement retraining or rehabilitation. These approaches can be particularly relevant when strength, stability or physical capacity needs to be rebuilt.

Are Spinal Adjustments Suitable for You?

Spinal manipulation should only be considered after appropriate assessment of your health history, symptoms and relevant precautions. Individual responses vary, and not every condition or patient is suitable for spinal adjustments.

New or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle region, severe symptoms following significant trauma, sudden severe headache or unusual neurological symptoms require prompt medical evaluation rather than routine chiropractic treatment.

Find Out Whether Spinal Adjustments Are Appropriate

If back pain, neck discomfort, stiffness or reduced mobility is affecting everyday activities, work or exercise, our chiropractors can assess your musculoskeletal needs and discuss whether spinal adjustments, physiotherapy, rehabilitation or another approach may be suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spinal Adjustments

The experience varies according to the patient, treatment area and technique. Some people experience little discomfort, while others may notice temporary tenderness or soreness afterwards. Patients should communicate discomfort or concerns so treatment can be adapted where appropriate.

Spinal adjustments may address joint mobility and musculoskeletal discomfort that influence movement, but posture is affected by multiple factors. Strength, mobility, movement habits and physical demands may also need to be considered.

There is no single number suitable for everyone. Treatment frequency depends on the patient's condition, symptoms, response to care and individual goals.
